How to maintain chrome wheels
When it comes to cleaning your shinny new wheels, many new rim owners are left in the dark. You must choose a product that will be safe for the material your wheel is made out of. There are many types of cleaners and polishes to choose from ranging from spray on wet shine, chrome wax, or metal polish. Here you will learn the different types of chrome polish and which is applicable to your type of chrome wheel. When first choosing a polish, it is important to determine what type of material your wheels are made out of. Aluminum Wheels Polished aluminum wheels are different from chrome wheels. Aluminum polished wheels will never rust which is one of the key differences from chrome wheels. To clean and polish aluminum wheels, you should start with a brillo pad and polish to a shine with any metal polish. A popular brand to polish aluminum wheels is simichrome. Simichrome is relatively inexpensive and should run you anywhere between $7 to $20. If you want to limit the amount of future maintenance, you may want to apply a clear coat after you polish a set of aluminum wheels. It is a little pricey($200-$300) but will require considerably less cleaning and polishing once completed. Chrome Wheels Chrome wheels can rust, but should not tarnish. Chrome wheels will not pit either, rather they will chip. The difference between a pit and a chip is quite obvious; a pit looks like a small dent whereas a chip looks like a flat sliver has been removed from the chrome plated surface. If you are purchasing or own used wheels, it should be pretty obvious using these tools to determine whether you have chrome or aluminum wheels. A popular and trusted chrome polish brand is Mother's. It not only polishes but removes any tarnish from the wheel surface.
